AEGIS INTEGER – Sand Timer (2007)

navigating the world with music …

AEGIS INTEGER is a relatively new band from Santa Rosa/California which blends (neo) psychedelic with heavy progressive elements and works out a unique style. So there is one effect that it’s quite difficult to assign them for an appropriate musical category. They came together via Internet and were founded at the beginning of this century. I consider their debut ‘Sand Timer’ quite successful. It convinces me because they are able to combine a very technical approach with intensive melodic and melancholic moments.

The opener Ouroboros is the album’s long track with nearly 12 minutes and also a very matured one. After the melancholic start reflecting a TALK TALK mood follows a heavy interlude similar to Steven Wilson’s PORCUPINE TREE. Danny Badorine’s guitar work is alternating further on between psychedelic spaced out parts and heavy riffs supported by some synth effects here and there and impressive vocals – a very interesting song. 8-Of-Diamonds and Mirrors And Hallways are working nearly in the same way provided with beautiful melodies and several surprises like a short jazzy interlude for example.

The mellow piano interlude Caressing the silence and the emotional acoustic song Leafless is cut off by Liminal Passage which knocks at the prog metal door with a strong impressive bass and guitar playing. Astral Peak on the other hand is a little way back oriented to the style of the album’s first half.

Sounds like crackling wood in a chimney are dominating All Is One whereas I’m not sure if this is the result of a live recording. At the end some acoustic guitar accompaniment and polyphonic vocals are following. Knowing that they are working on a new album which is annouced for summer 2008 I’m quite curious what follows. To reach for some impressions I recommend to check out their songs on myspace – 3.5 stars for this album. by Rivertree AEGIS INTEGER Music Online: recommended progarchives.com worldwide prog rock stores
