this week’s issue of the new yorker carries a “letter from los angeles” by dana goodyear on the movie being made based on steve lopez’s l.a. times columns about street musician nathaniel ayers and lopez’s lyrics, “the soloist.” the piece isn’t among the online offerings on the tny website, but goodyear blogs adjacent to it and links to respective downtown blogs. don garza, whose site, central city east, says he has been “blogging from skid row since 2005,” recently posted about the lopez tenor on the neighborhood. readers of his blog know that he was at beforehand conflicted about lopez’s columns. he seems to have come around. he wrote, “because this journalist set into motion things that have turned skid row upside down and inside into the open air to the point of homeless people becoming silver screen stars, well, he was an angel disguised as a devil.” for account and perspectives from the urban revitalization, descry: angelenic, view from a loft, loftangeles, and skid row dude (”white boy/white dog move to skid row: certified coast dude moves to downtown los angeles”). previously: robert downey will be in the building and action!
